Exciting Changes to Music Leadership for Summer 2012

Naramata Centre program staff  have decided to try a new music leadership model for Summer 2012 given lower participation at musical events in recent summers, the demanding schedule of our Music Resource team and the Centre’s budget constraints. As part of the 2012 music leadership model, we will:

1.   Develop a team of young, emerging musicians who will be part of summer staff. The team of 2-3 people will focus on community participation and leadership.

2.   Keep the Sabbath, no Wednesday concert

3.   Celebrate the Gifts of the Community on Thursday night with an open mic opportunity. The first 45 minutes is for all ages. Then there is an intermission for those that go to bed early. The evening continues for another hour and 15 minutes – including a 30-minute set of our morning program musicians.

4.   Have musicians leading an adult or multiple-ages morning singing program each week

For complete details go to Summer Weeks.

"Welcome to Naramata Centre!"

Here is some information for people who have never attended a Naramata Centre summer week:

Morning Program (9:00 – noon Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 9:00 – 10:30 am Wednesday)

  • Adults: Each week there are numerous morning program options which adults can select from. Courses are led by experienced, skilled people who value experiential education, and whose leadership style and approach to learning are in harmony with Naramata Centre’s mission and values. Adults may select one program which they will attend from Monday to Friday. When registering, adults are encouraged to select a second choice in case the first choice program is full.
  • Children and Youth: Children and youth gather in age-specific groups for theme-related programs set in a spiritually-based, welcoming environment, except during two Intergenerational weeks (see All Ages Morning Programs below). The mornings include a variety of activities, such as nature walks, crafts, games, singing, swimming, storytelling and conversation.
  • All-Age Morning Programs July 22-28 and August 19-25: Children, youth and adults, learn and play together. Most of the programs in these two weeks are open to anyone entering grade 3 and higher. A few programs require children and adults to register together; these and any other limits are included in the program description. Children up to and including grade 2 will have their own special morning programs. When registering, children, youth and adults are encouraged to select a second choice in case their first choice program is full.
  • Children’s House: Infants and toddlers under the age of 3 (and 3 year-olds who are not toilet trained) are cared for in our Children’s House, with one-to-one care provided by trained and supervised caregivers. The Children’s House provides a wonderful, safe environment for your infant or toddler while you and other family members participate in morning programs

Wednesday Sabbath

As a community we will enjoy the gifts of Sabbath, a time to pause and reflect and celebrate. The morning includes a shorter program time, followed by the community worship at the Beach. Through generous sponsorship, we are delighted to offer a free community BBQ lunch following worship. The afternoon offers free time. An all-age concert closes the Naramata Centre Sabbath day.

Afternoon and Evening

  • Free afternoons:  Opportunities for beach, friends, walks, rests. Healing House session or Spiritual Director. You can also access the use of games and beach toys from our Sports Shed (check at office).

  • Early Evening All Ages activities: Available on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 – 8:00 pm which includes singing and theme-related activities for all ages.
  • Wednesday evening Sabbath time..
  • Later Evening Adult Program: On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings adults are invited to join in a presentation, conversation and imagination by resource people who offer an one hour session.
  • Evening Programs for Youth: On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings programs are offered for Junior and Senior youth.
  • Afternoon and Evening Care Giving: Some caregivers will be available during the afternoons and evenings. A list of trained caregivers is available at the office and at the Children’s House. Paying for extra caregiving hours will be your responsibility.

Animals On Site

  • We love pets, but we do not allow them on site at Naramata Centre. There are many reasons for this policy, not least of which is that there is an overwhelming agreement from our participants.
  • Service animals, however, are welcome onsite. Owners and handlers are responsible for cleaning up after their aide animal.
