Summer - Young Adult Programs
Four out of seven weeks this year will include a special option for young adults. Enjoy a morning program with a thematic focus and peer community experiences. The Young Adult program, for ages 18-22, will be offered the weeks of July 25, August 1 and August 8. The Young Adult Choir (ages 18-30) has become a significant part of our Music Week, starting July 18, this year.
Week 1: Wake Up

1- 1: Playful Yoga: Anything is Possible! - This program is full, but we are accepting names for a waitlist.
This workshop will inspire you right out of your comfort zone! Practice restorative yoga on the grass, Thai massage in the sunshine, and meditation in the orchard. Expect to be amazed at your own physical capabilities, bonded to your new playmates, and deeply connected to your spirit. Whatever your age - your shape, size and skill level will be embraced. Re-connect with yourself, your community and the Creator through yoga play – come fly with us!

1- 2: Cooking - Culinary Delights Awakened - Sorry, this program is full.Do you remember the smells of Grandma’s kitchen? Did they awaken your senses and get you excited to see what was in the oven or on the stove? That’s what you will experience when we gather in the outdoor country kitchen (the campground picnic shelter)! Come and share your passion for good food, re-live some memories of the past and learn as you cook. No matter your age, this program will be delicious fun.

1- 4: Singing, Rhythm and Body Percussion
Clap your hands, stomp your feet and raise your voice! Discover the joy of creative expression, music and rhythm while using one of the world’s first instruments . . . the human body. Together we will groove and “La la la” our way through co-operative, fun and funky a capella songs, steps and rhythms from around the world. This program is for all levels — no experience is required to have a good time.

1- 5: Storytelling: Fed By Our Stories
We each have a message to bring to the world, something we have learned from our unique life experience. A story is a way of sharing meaning and values, and a method for building trust and community. We will share examples of our personal stories, and learn how to tell them effectively, all in a safe, supportive environment.

1- 6: Awakening the Creative Spirit

1- 7: Qi Gong: Tai Chi for All Ages - This program is full, but we are accepting names for a waitlist.
Tai Chi that spans the ages! This program offers “peace through movement.” Expect time indoors and outdoors, with guidance to a place of harmony of body, mind and spirit. Learn by listening, watching and moving – all helping you to playfully cultivate mindfulness, nurture self-healing, and enter deep relaxation. A time for energy renewal.

1- 8: Come Join the Band
Have you been playing your instrument more than a year? Come join the band! We will play easy jazz arrangements of old hymns, look at their history, explore playing techniques, and have a great time making music together. Expect tips on improvisation and ideas about how to start a church band in your congregation! No matter what instrument you play, there’s a place for you in the band.

1- 9: Games – Play, Explore, Run and Restore!
Come and experience play as a means of rest, exploration, connection, spiritual learning, renewal and fun. Each morning will include a “wide” game for everyone. Participants will also have the opportunity to choose from a number of shorter games, both active and quiet. Enjoy mornings in the best possible way … play, play, play!

1- 10: Theatre Workshop
No previous acting experience required! Come and join in theatre games, improvisation, and play-writing. We will create a safe environment to share our stories. Games and activities in this workshop will strengthen self-esteem, help build community in the group, suggest creative ways of problem solving, and develop listening and communication skills. Come for the experience, leave with a sense of accomplishment. Bravo!

1- 11: Exploring Godly Play
This is no ordinary, lecture-style Bible Study! This will be a time to wonder, imagine, create and experience the stories of our faith. Be awakened to each story’s richness and delighted by what you find! There will be time as individuals and as a group to listen, watch and wonder, to play with the story, and to be creative with inspiring art materials.

1- 12: Canoeing - Sorry, this program is full.suitable for beginners. We’ll take morning paddles along the shoreline of Lake Okanagan, learn a variety of strokes including how to make the canoe travel straight, and how to make it turn. We’ll learn about safety, practice tipping canoes, and rescuing each other, and play games in our boats. Participants must bring their own paddle and lifejacket. If you have a canoe, please bring it, or let us know you need one. (Please note on your registration whether you are bringing or need a canoe!) Children under 12 must sign up with someone 16 or older. All fitness levels welcome.

1- 13: Wake-Up and Draw - This program is full, but we are accepting names for a waitlist.
Drawing is a natural way to wake-up to the world around you! Both reluctant would-be artists who need gentle encouragement and more experienced artists who want to practice their skills are welcome. A wide range of techniques and approaches will be introduced. You can expect demonstrations and structured activities as well as freedom to play. No experience needed. Recommended for ages 10 and older.

1- 14: Each New Day: Practices for Playful Prayer

2- 1: Young Adult Choir
A deepening tradition since first offered at Naramata Centre in 2002, this choir rehearses each morning and evening. All voices are welcome. Join us for an inspiring and fun-filled week where you can feel safe, take risks, expand your voice and self-awareness and sing out! For young adults ages 18-30. Registration limit: 50 singers

2- 2: Green Choir
All God’s creatures got a place in the choir! The Green Choir offers an introduction to choral singing. Tailored to adult beginning singers, the Green Choir rehearses each morning and early evening. The focus is on learning to use your voice, learning to join your voice with others, understanding some basic music concepts and enjoyment! For people 18 and older. Registration limit: 25 singers.

2- 3: Grand Choir
The Grand Choir meets every morning and early evening in a gently challenging, and encouraging atmosphere, with attention to vocal technique, and developing a sense of caring Christian community through music. This week offers a rare chance to participate in a large adult chorus! For people 18 and older. Registration limit: 175 singers.

2- 4: Pottery - This program is full, but we are accepting names for a waitlist.Come and express yourself through clay. You’ll have an opportunity to learn how to shape, mould and create a variety of objects. You can also give the pottery wheel a whirl. For those wishing to explore slip (wet clay) decoration of flat pieces, tiles and masks, instruction will be available. You will learn how to glaze and fire, and the group as a whole will support each person’s artistic endeavours. Expect dirt under your finger nails in this program of hands-on learning!

Week 3: Bend and Stretch

3- 1: Exploring Theatre for ChangeNo theatre experience necessary: just bring yourself! Theatre of the Oppressed invites us to play, dialogue, and connect with each other. Developed in Brazil, it is now used all over the world. Come and examine power dynamics, including some of the –isms you experience or see around you. There will be lots of in-your-body activities – we’ll be up and moving a lot during our time together. Come learn about Theatre of the Opressed and try out tools you can use in many different group settings!

3- 2: Living Flowers: Exploring Ikebana
Stretch your ability to listen and see. Discover your ability to bend and to hear what the universe is saying to you. You will learn basic Japanese flower arranging (Ikebana means living flowers) and improve your skills and knowledge beyond the basics, as you are ready. After a short lesson on Ikebana basics and history, learn to express your thoughts, feelings and desires through arranging flowers. Advanced styles and techniques will be introduced.

3- 3: Yoga - How the Body Awakens Us to the Soul - Sorry, this program is full.
Enjoy bending and stretching your body, while awakening the energy of the chakras and your spirit through Yoga. This ancient practice is rich with insights on how we connect to God through our body, mind and spirit. We will explore yoga postures, breath work to quieten the mind, and simple meditations that guide us to understand the spirit within. Please bring a yoga mat if possible, and feel free to bring props you enjoy using.

3- 4: Acts of Poetry - This program is full, but we are accepting names for a waitlist.
Is it true that poetry is the shortest distance between two hearts? Be part of this program and help prove it is. No previous writing experience is required, just a willingness to stop and listen to the poems inside each of us. You can expect learning moments, listening moments, and writing moments as each individual creates poetry and the group as a whole learns together.

3- 5: Enneagram Level 2The Enneagram is a dynamic tool for self understanding, change and transformation. It combines the insights of modern psychology with the wisdom of ancient spiritual traditions. Learning about the Enneagram changes the way we relate to ourselves, to others and the universe. This Level 2 program begins the deeper journey of exploring this complex and intricate symbol, moving beyond typology to working with its inner flow, movement and dynamics. For those who have taken an introductory Enneagram program at Naramata Centre.

3- 6: Challenging Perceptions: Conflict and Controversy in Modern Cinema - Sorry, this program is full.Movie censorship in North America is less restrictive than in the past, allowing modern films to make bold political and social statements that were unthinkable in previous decades. Some of these films have provoked intense public reaction. However, some have been overlooked by a society bombarded by visual culture. Spend a week with us viewing and discussing some of the controversial topics contained in modern cinema. Bring your critical eye and strong opinions; we’ll bring the snacks!

3- 7: The Spirit of Conflict: Growing Through Our Differences“Make me willing, sometimes even eager for the stretching journey…” – Owen Dowling
Wanting to expand your understanding of conflict? Wishing you could remain grounded in conflict situations? If so, this program is for you. Beginning with an exploration of our spiritual beliefs and experiences, we will then look at how these connect with beliefs and experiences we have in regards to conflict. Our goal will be to gain insights into what each of us brings to our interactions, and to understand how conflict is an important part of our journey.

3- 8: Sea Kayaking - Sorry, this program is full.
No other sport connects you more intimately with water and nature than kayaking. Enjoy a week of learning to kayak in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. You will spend most of your time on the water learning a variety of strokes and basic kayaking safety including wet exits and rescues. Other topics such as clothing, trip planning and simple navigation will also be touched on. Participants may bring their own sea kayak, paddle and personal floatation device, or have everything provided for a fee of $200.

3- 9: Young Adult Program - Your Voice, Your PowerWho are you becoming? Moving from adolescence into adulthood is considered by many traditions to be the most important life transition, not to be attempted alone. There is a place meant for you in this world! Come and look at what is changing in your life, explore your power and creative energies, do interactive and unexpected activities and spend lots of time outside.

Week 4: Work and Play

4- 2: The Hands-On Gardening Project
Whether you are a seasoned gardener or novice, this is a chance to work together to create a beautiful sustainable garden for the Centre while learning how to maintain and enhance your own garden. Working from a basic plan, the garden’s shape will grow and evolve over the week, with your input. We’ll touch on water conservation, composting, chemical-free gardening and ecological design, and answer your gardening questions. Be outside, listen to the birds, feel the soil on your hands, work at your own pace, contribute to making a garden for Naramata Centre. Be prepared to grow, create, have fun and make a difference!

4- 3: Gospel/World Music Choir - Sorry, this program is full.Lift up your voice and feed your soul! Experience the passion and the power of gospel and world music, and the joy of singing with others. 4- 4: Stumbling Upon God - This program is full, but we are accepting names for a waitlist.Five morning walks will draw on contemplative wisdom as we search for a deeper relationship within the natural world. In wilderness terrain, paying attention can reveal a landscape full of detail, wonder and surprise. Walking becomes an act of creation, where we step with constant humility into the extravagant heart of God. Bring good walking footwear, water, your pilgrim staff – and all-weather gear. You should be in good physical fitness, and able to walk 2-3 hours. (Trails are moderate +, and include hill sections. Some off-site trails will require carpooling.)

4- 5: Quilting 101: Design Your Own Placemats
Play, experiment, and create! Discover the satisfaction of developing your quilting skills. Using fabrics that you have chosen, you will design and create quilted placemats. You will be guided through basic quilting techniques and offered several design options. No quilting experience necessary but you are required to bring a sewing machine and need to have basic sewing skills. The only prerequisite is a desire to have fun and learn something new.

4- 6: Three Faith Traditions at Work and Play - Sorry, this program is full.
Being religious is all about intentionally giving one’s whole being – body, mind and spirit – to a path for life; it’s active as much as reflective. In this ‘work and play’ shop we will take seriously and playfully the embodied nature of these three religions. Through a lively rhythm of action and reflection we will uncover the Godly work and holy play that distinguishes the three paths and also significantly connects them.

We’ll start from the belief that each part of our body deserves to move efficiently and with ease. While overuse of some muscles can create pain, stiffness or fatigue, you are invited to rediscover your body as it moves and stretches. 4- 8: SoulCollage© - Sorry, this program is full.Imagine using your dreams, imagination and intuition to create a unique deck of cards that represents you! SoulCollage© involves working with the language of symbols, images and archetypes to discover the ongoing “story of you.” Participants intuitively select powerful images that reflect the different parts of who they are. Using collage, an art process easy for anyone, you will begin creating a personal deck of SoulCollage cards that you can add to, delight in and consult for a lifetime. Every card is unique and personal, forming a visual journal.

4- 10: Pottery
Work and play are both important, and the creation of your own works in clay is a great way to centre yourself. You will create projects that are inspired by the theme. This will be a time of hands-on learning for both beginners and more advanced students. 5- 1: Morning Song
Do you love to sing? Do you enjoy harmonizing? If you do, please join us for five joyful and inspiring mornings of song. Together we will share hymns of praise and prayer, compassion and justice. We’ll also join our voices in harmony to form a choir. Drawing on a wealth of contemporary and international music, we will sing the rhythms of our days and the seasons of our spirit. 5- 2: Purls of Wisdom – Contemplative KnittingKnitting is a simple act of two stitches: knitting and purling. Once you’ve mastered these, you can become a mindful knitter. As meditation, knitting calms the mind with its gentle, repetitive rhythms. Feed your soul by creating something beautiful — a shawl to give comfort and pleasure. There will be time for individual skill-building and to network by knitting a community shawl co-operatively. Bring knitting needles and yarn; a supply list will be sent to you prior to the program. For knitters of all levels, including new knitters.

5- 3: Road Biking - Finding Your Place in the Peloton of Life - This program is full, but we are accepting names for a waitlist.Experience the thrills of road cycling as we practise techniques for safely riding in a peloton on the scenic back roads of the Okanagan. Guided by Tour de Faith – A Cyclist’s Lessons for Living (by Rev. Robert F. Molsberry), we will reflect on the lessons that road cycling offers us for Christian living. Participants require their own road bike in good working order (bikes will be inspected to ensure safety), should be capable of riding for up to two hours at a sustained pace (not necessarily fast!), and can expect to ride between 25 and 50 kilometres each morning.

5- 4: Building A Better WorldCome explore how we can build a more just and sustainable Canada – and world. Interactive activities will take us on a journey starting with envisioning what the future could look like, then exploring how we can be effective change agents, and ending with an understanding of how to overcome the obstacles in our paths. This course does not dwell on the woes of the world – it celebrates solutions. With the belief that each of us can make a difference, Naramata is the perfect, peaceful spot to contemplate how to combat climate change, eradicate poverty and change the world!

5- 5: Sacred Circle Dance“Dance, dance, where ever you may be.” Our body is an instrument of prayer and celebration. Experience joy, peace, exuberance and connection through dances from many cultures and many spiritual paths. We’ll come together as individuals, bending like willow wisps, as we weave a basket of trust and love, where we connect with Spirit in healing, celebration and devotion. We’ll leave touched, enriched, and filled so we can share with others.

Jung The bridge to the unconscious – which holds all we need to heal and become whole – is the “inferior function,” the one least under conscious control. It is our Achilles’ heel, the source of inner tension but also of creativity and genius. Get to know your body energetically and learn a variety of techniques to keep your energy flowing and vibrant. You will leave with tools to create an energetic environment in your life that supports your purpose and your unique self – restored and rejuvenated!

You can gather words, play with language and write poems! In this program for young adults (ages 18-22), we’ll get to know each other, explore our creativity, and break the rules for writing and art. Our inspiration will be gathered from many sources. Together we’ll explore writing, make hand-made and altered books, spoken word poetry and correspondence art. We’ll use a variety of supplies and creative processes as we work together to create a week that builds on the interests of our group. 6- 1: Preserving Our Food
What do food security and eating locally mean to you? These topics may take on new meaning as we enjoy the bounty of the summer harvest by learning to preserve it for winter use. We’ll explore techniques for canning, drying, freezing, pickling and storing fruits and vegetables. Come ready to roll up your sleeves and share a tasty week of fun, learning and some good old-fashioned work.

6- 2: Restorative Flow Yoga - This program is full, but we are accepting names for a waitlist.Experience respite from the buzz and busy-ness of life’s demands in this luxuriously relaxing and deeply nourishing contemplative practice. Together we will cultivate relaxation and ease with slow, gentle, basic posture flow to feel the physical, emotional and spiritual benefits of breath, authentic movement and stillness. We’ll linger to savour the precious pause of the moment with breath awareness, mindfulness and journaling. This oasis of healing and rejuvenation, open to all levels of ability, is an opportunity for body, mind and soul to express itself fully and, at the same time, to simply be.

6- 3: Introduction to Silence“Silence is a friend that claims us …” Across traditions, cultures and time, silence has been valued as a way to restore our connection with Spirit, our deepest selves, and all of creation. The gifts of calmness, inner peace and communion await. During the week we’ll be inspired by the wisdom of great spiritual teachers. We’ll practice entering the Great Silence through chanting, movement, praying-the-scriptures, and creativity. We’ll be nourished as we experience Silence alone and together and reflect on our discoveries. “Wise are those who learn through silence.”

6- 4: Awakening to Me: Exploring Self-Image through Art-MakingExplore Jung’s concepts of the ego, persona, shadow and self, through simple art-making and exercises to draw out self-images that offer insight into parts of yourself you would like to know more about. Experience a combination of play and reflection, activating both sides of the brain, balancing creativity and practicality, imagination and reality. Discover how the different aspects of your self help you perform the many tasks in life, as well as move you towards wholeness. Come make art and meet yourself. No previous artistic experience is required.

6- 5: Healing Pathway Phase II: Healing From the Heart
This course provides an opportunity for you to deepen your healing practice. If you have completed Phase 1 of the Healing Pathway you are welcome to register! As part of a supportive community, you will focus on deepening your connection to God’s healing power through the heart centre, deepen and integrate familiar techniques and learn new ones.

We will reconnect to our earthly roots by hiking, playing, reflecting and immersing our senses in diverse and inspirational natural settings in the Naramata area. Hiking will require moderate physical exertion.

6- 7: Painting with WatercoloursHave you ever stood really close to an original painting? You can see brush strokes, layers of paint, one colour on top of another coming together to create an image of something. When the same painting is viewed from a distance, you can see what the artist is expressing with colour and shapes. Painting with watercolours requires a desire to give it a try, an openness to learn a few techniques, and the patience to let the paper dry! All levels of painters, including beginners, are welcome to participate in this program.

6- 8: Introductory MassageExperience the healing power of giving and receiving massage. This course covers several Swedish massage techniques, proper massage body dynamics and guided relaxation techniques for massage sessions. By the end of the week, you will be able to give and receive a 90 minute relaxation massage. Come and learn about the power of touch and create a stronger connection between your mind and body. 6- 9: Pottery
Our bodies need time to restore. This week, you can restore your body through the joy of creating from clay. Come and work on projects that are inspired by the theme. The finished items will awaken you to the connection you have with your surroundings, and will offer the joy of using your own creations in daily life. Whether you are a beginner or a more advanced student, projects will be designed to bring a sense of satisfaction from the results of your efforts. The program will focus on oxidation firing and unique glaze effects.

7- 1: Cooking Together: Yum, Yum, Yum - Sorry, this program is full.Do you ever dream of food? Do you ever imagine all the great meals you could create? Do you ever think of food as a miracle? The bounty of the Naramata harvest awaits. We’ll prepare food each day using a variety of local food sources, we’ll head out for a food based field trip or two, and we’ll use our imagination in the Naramata Iron-Chef Challenge – working with one basic ingredient! We will also explore the reality, blessing and responsibility of food in a world where many go hungry. This hands-on, working together program will conclude with a special meal together, Friday lunch.

7- 2: Kite-Making & FlyingBuild, decorate and fly your very own kites! There will be many designs to choose from, including traditional Asian kites and winged box kites. Discover why cultures around the world are fascinated with flight and join in the centuries-old tradition of sending your own creations into the sky. No experience necessary.

7- 3: Sing! Sing! Sing!
Kick off your shoes and have fun singing a variety of music genres including gospel, swing, folk, popular hits, songs from musicals, and selections celebrating the Dream and Imagine theme. We’ll begin each day with vocal warm ups to strengthen your voice, followed by a singalong in unison. Then learn to find a harmony both by ear (for those well-known folk songs) and by written lines for mulit-part arrangements. Singing improves memory, concentration, and well being. Musical instruments welcome!

7- 4: The Art and Craft of Batik - This program is full, but we are accepting names for a waitlist.You can learn the ancient art of decorating cloth using wax and dye. This art form is thought to have originated in South East Asia. Batik cloth is still made in Indonesia today. Batik includes the process of using traditional tools to draw a hot wax design onto cloth, which is then dyed. It can be very relaxing to do! Step by step, this hands-on program will guide you to draw with wax, mix dyes, soak and hang your work, and iron out excess wax. Come let your imagination soar and try batik!

7- 5: Massage for all AgesYou will be able to give and receive a 90-minute relaxation massage! Learn how to work on the back, legs, arms, neck, head and face in a comfortable and safe environment. If you have found that your thumbs give out after ten minutes of trying to give a massage, this program is for you. Proper body dynamics and correct techniques are the secrets to being able to give long sessions without tiring yourself. This program is open to all.

7- 6: Stained Glass Mosaics - Sorry, this program is full.Explore light, colour, pattern, texture and shape using beautiful stained glass and mirror to create individual mosaic art pieces. You will learn to select, cut and break glass into shapes, lay the pieces in patterns of your choice, glue them to a solid surface (glass or wood), and finish your work by grouting. We’ll begin with a framed mirror to learn the basics, and then move on to other pieces of your choice. Create a wall plaque, vase, small tabletop, birdhouse or garden stepping stone.

7- 7: Playback Theatre: Improv from the HeartLooking for fun, magic and challenging jam sessions for the whole mind/body/spirit? This program fits the bill! Introducing a method called Playback Theatre, we’ll offer our personal stories, then respond using drama, improv writing, voice and sound, painting and collage. Our responses will serve to help highlight themes of suffering, wisdom, compassion and joy. Expect your emotional intelligence and imagination to be gently stretched in new directions.

7- 8: Social DancingThis is a fun introductory class to learn simple basics in Jive, Tango, Foxtrot, Salsa and more. Partner dances and a few solo line dances will be included. Enjoy learning about music and movement in a relaxed setting. Be prepared for a week of variety and fun. All are welcome! Most suited to those ten years old and older. Please register with another person who will be your partner in this course.

7- 9: Collective Creation in New MediaIf you have ever dreamt of directing a movie or imagined yourself in front of the camera, this is your chance. Learn how to tell a visual story and produce a short, fun video. In small intergenerational groups you will learn the skills of getting great shots and editing your group’s video. If you have a video camera, bring it along. If not, one will be provided for each group.

7- 11: Spirit Drum
The drum beat calls us into community. With the African drum as our medium we’ll express ourselves through rhythm and song, and have fun! In the drum circle we can learn about inclusiveness, spirituality, creativity, building community and living in peace and tolerance. This playshop is suited to beginners or more experienced players and involves body percussion, drum circle games, storytelling, sound healing techniques and playing percussion instruments from around the world. Open to ages 10 and older.

This program offers an exploration of the potter’s craft from the creation of simple forms to molding, rolling, coiling, pinching and the joys and excitement of wheel-thrown clay pieces.
